Could my mom be pre-menopausal?

my mom will be 49 this year and experiencing some weird periods, i told her she is probably heading towards menopause, but what do you think? she started a period sept 20 it ended sept 25. then 10 days later on the 5th of oct she started another period and is 4 days into it now. in between the end of the last one and the start of this one her whole body ached, cramps, nausea and her were very tender. what could this be?
